Count of Modica’s Castle, defying the time remains almost undamaged, and it asks to be known in its historical reality, to be exploited with touristic aim, too.
Sicily, situated at centre of the Mediterranean,
has been the bridge between Europe, Africa and East, meeting and clash
point between the struggling countries, it suffered a lot of invasions in
the course of history. The primitive conquerors of Sicily were the “Sicani”,
who came from Spain, the “Siculi” who came from Italy and the
Elimi, Troyans escaped from Achaei. The “Elimi” conquered the
western part of Sicily and they built a lot of historical Grecian
monuments. In 580 b.C. the
Greeks occupied Sicily. In 700 b.C. the Phoenicians, who installed only the trade ports (“Mozia, Palermo, Selinunte, Trapani”) arrived. The arrival of the Romans, changed the island into “Granary of the Republic”: the island was subjected to terrible disappearances of its artistic prosperities. After the fall of the Roman Empire, “Alcamo”, like the other Sicilian cities, suffered for the barbaric invasions and for the subsequent Bizantin domination, in IV century A.D.
